Why people look for Candy AI alternatives

Candy AI does several things well. The characters look polished, onboarding is fast, and adult content is available without jumping through hoops. That is why it got big, and it is worth saying before listing complaints.

The friction is structural. Like many companion apps, Candy pairs a subscription with a token balance, and the things people most want — images, voice, extra generations — draw from those tokens. That is not a scam; image and voice generation cost real money to run. But it does mean the price on the plan card is a floor, and heavy users can end up buying top-ups most months.

The second complaint is continuity. Every hosted companion has a finite context window, and once a conversation grows past it, early details have to be summarised or dropped. How gracefully an app handles that is the difference between a character who remembers your backstory and one who asks your name again.

The third is visual drift: the character in image ten does not quite look like the character in image one. That comes from how the images are generated, and it is the easiest of the three to test for before you pay anywhere.

Before switching, name the problem you are leaving. Cost, memory, and image consistency point to different alternatives, and no single app is best at all three.

nsfw.fun is built around one idea: the photo or video should come out of the conversation you are having, with the same face every time. Characters are anchored to a reference image rather than re-described from text, so a new outfit or scene is a change to an established person rather than a fresh roll of the dice. You can pick from the roster or create your own character.

Beyond one-to-one chat there is a Story mode with branching timelines you can return to, and the studio lets you choose pose, outfit, scene, and style as separate controls, including scenes with more than one character. Photos can be carried forward into short videos.

The limitations, stated plainly. There is no free plan: signed-out visitors can chat with a character for a few replies without creating an account, but ongoing chat and generation need Premium. It is a web app rather than a native mobile app. And like every hosted service, your conversations live on our servers, not your machine.

At the time of writing, the plans listed on its own subscribe page are Get a Taste at $5.95 a month (no ads, 4K context), True Supporter at $19.95 (8K context, Semantic Memory 2.0, longer replies, in-chat images), and I'm All In at $29.95 (32K context, its best models, text-to-speech). Annual billing is advertised at about 17% off.

The trade-off is that it is text-first. In-chat images exist on the middle tier and up, but it is not built around keeping one character visually consistent across a gallery or turning images into video. SpicyChat has also added age verification in a number of regions, so availability depends on where you are.

3. Janitor AI: best free option for text roleplay

Janitor AI is a front end for character roleplay with a very large community library. It runs its own free model, JanitorLLM, by default. Its help centre puts that model's context at roughly 8,000 to 9,000 tokens. You can also connect your own API key from an outside provider if you want a different model.

That flexibility is the draw and the catch. With the free model it costs nothing, and quality is decent for short scenes. With your own key, quality depends on the model you pick and you pay that provider directly, which adds setup most companion apps hide from you.

There is no built-in image or video generation, so if Candy's visuals were part of the appeal, Janitor replaces the chat and nothing else. It has also announced mandatory age checks for users in the UK, Australia, and Brazil.

4. Kindroid: best for voice and long-term companionship

Kindroid is 18+ and allows explicit text and images, but its real focus is the companion relationship over time: backstory, journals, voice calls, and a character that develops. Users who liked Candy for the girlfriend feeling rather than the gallery tend to land here.

It offers a standard subscription with optional add-on tiers on top. We could not confirm current prices on Kindroid's own site, so check the in-app pricing rather than trusting a number from a review.

The trade-off is visual. Image generation exists, but it is not the centre of the product, and there is no scene-by-scene studio or video pipeline comparable to a media-first app.

5. Nomi AI: best for emotional continuity

Nomi is also 18+ and permits adult roleplay, and it has a reputation for companions that track how you feel and how the relationship has evolved, rather than just recent messages. Paid plans include unlimited messages and image generation within daily limits.

Reported monthly prices vary between sources and app stores, so check the current price in the app before subscribing.

If what frustrated you about Candy was feeling like the character did not know you, Nomi is worth a trial. If what frustrated you was the images, it is not the fix.

6. A local model: best for complete privacy

Running an open-weight model on your own machine through a tool like LM Studio or Ollama, often paired with a front end such as SillyTavern, is the only option where nothing leaves your computer. No account, no billing, no policy changes.

The costs are a capable GPU, a real setup curve, and building your own image pipeline if you want pictures. For people who enjoy the tinkering it is the best setup available. For everyone else, the maintenance never stops.

How we compared them

We weighed five things, in this order: whether adult content is supported consistently rather than silently degraded, how the product handles long conversations, whether images keep the same character, what a realistic month costs once add-ons are counted, and how clear the privacy and billing terms are.

We used each provider's own pricing, help, and policy pages for every hard claim, and left out numbers we could only find on affiliate review sites. That makes this list less exciting than one full of made-up stats, but more likely to still be true when you read it.
